VAT stands for Value-Added-Tax and is a tax levied by SARS on the supply of goods and services. You must register your business for VAT if the total value goods or services sold within a 12-month period exceeds R1 million. This is referred to as a Compulsory Registration. However, you can still register for VAT voluntarily (Voluntary Registration) if you have sold goods or services of at least R50,000 in a 12-month period.
A lot of tenders, contracts and corporates prefer to deal with companies that are VAT registered so it is beneficial for business growth if one trades with a VAT number.
